Sands welcomes the federal government’s announcement that parents dealing with stillbirths and infant deaths will soon have access to 12 months unpaid parental leave under legislation flagged for later this year. This will bring bereaved parents’ leave entitlements in line with those of any other new parent in Australia for the first time. Importantly, it also acknowledges their parenthood and the deep impact that the loss of a baby has on all aspects of their life.

It’s crucial that bereaved parents have the time to grieve, to access support and to adjust to life without the baby they had excitedly planned for and expected and we look forward to further details of the draft legislation being released. In light of this announcement we also call on employers to consider the role they can play in ensuring employees are well supported in their eventual return to work after the death of their baby.
